Today fewer than 200 remain, most of whom are e<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lderly. The few young people who remain are just waiting for their chance to leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among those who await the right moment to leave are three young men, all under the age of 2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0, whom I met in the courtyard of the Church of Saint Nicholas during one of many visits to Janjevo with K2.0&#8217;s photographer over the last few months. L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ike most people we spoke to in Janjevo and Letnica, the young men don\u2019t want us t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o mention their names publicly or photograph th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">em, saying they&#8217;d had bad experiences with the media in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hen asked what they do and how they live here, they answer almost in unison: &#8220;Wasting time!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They said that they hope to move to Croatia soon and that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they still don&#8217;t have Croatian documents and must, like all other Kosovars, wait for a visa. They hope to be able to stay in Croatia, where they have family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know it\u2019s going to be tough. Croatia isn&#8217;t ideal either,&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of them said,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adding that they would start as seasonal workers, probably somewhere on the seaside. How they&#8217;d get along and what they&#8217;d do after the season, they don&#8217;t know yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no reason for us to remain here. There\u2019s nothing here,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> another said while the others nod in agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s just one daily bus from Janjevo to Prishtina. Most of their peers have already left and the three of them have barely anyone to socialize with. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They said that if they stay, they would likely never have a chance to meet girls, get married or have a family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The three of them spent last winter and spring 2022 counting down the days until their final departure.<br><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\"><br><b>Janjevo<br><\/b><\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">Janjevo is a semi-deserted town at the end of the road, some 20 kilometers from Prishtina. Houses, a church and a mosque sit between the mountain<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">s, squeezed into<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\"> narrow streets, some of which are still paved in cobblestone. It\u2019s difficult to find a house in which anyone lives and which i<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">sn&#8217;t damaged. S<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">ome were abandoned so long ago that trees grow out from inside or have animals as their only inhabitants, including stray dogs who&#8217;ve found shelter, or domestic animals looked after by locals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The center of the town consists of a small clinic, a local community building, a few coffee shops and a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> soup kitche<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n, likely the most visited place in Janjevo, w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here one meal a day is given out to around 126 people of all faiths and nations.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b1a0c07 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b1a0c07\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-20bf501\" data-id=\"20bf501\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17a23d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"17a23d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.kosovotwopointzero.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/FLM-Croats.001.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-75762\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Abandoned houses are scattered across Janjevo. Wood is the main source of heating in Janjevo, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and often the only source of income for many residents. In the center there is als<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o a small branch of a plastics processing factory<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which some locals work.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janjevo used to be known for its cheese, sujuk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (cured sausage) and for local wine, which is almost impossible to find these days. Nikola, one of the last small producers, and one of the roughly 150 Croats here, says that he too will soon halt production. Of the many family members who used to live in Janjevo, only he, his wife and one son remain.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the pandemic his wife contracted Covid and she hasn\u2019t fully recovered since. Nikola says that he is getting older, it is becoming increasingly difficult to work in the fields and their son can\u2019t do it all on his own. They decided that as of next year they will stop producing sujuk and cheese, sell their livestock and live on what they have left \u2014 savings, pensions and assistance from their family in Croatia. They say that there is no other way. They have trouble placing and selling cheese and sujuk in the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> market and there&#8217;s no way to hire someone to help them in the fields.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e Croats of Janjevo a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">re proud of their past and make sure to mention that their town gave birth to a gold-medal winning Olympian, Jo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sip Glasnov<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i\u0107, who was born in Janjevo but wh<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vecernji.hr\/vijesti\/plenkovic-obisao-janjevo-don-palic-upozorio-ne-mozemo-reci-da-je-situacija-normalna-za-zivot-1539617\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first visit to Kosovo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an adult was last November.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quiet atmosphere in town changes only on Fridays, when a small market opens up on the main square and people arrive from surrounding villages.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until the begin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ning of the 1990s Janjevo and its surroundings had around 750 registered businesses. Throug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hout history, Janjevo was known for its silver and lead mines, as well as craftsmen, which is why it was a trade center of this part of Kosovo. In the 20th century, metal and plastic processing factories opened up. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Locals said that today fewer than 10 registered businesses remain.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Dubrovnik Street, in the city cente<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r, we cli<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mbed up to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Saint Nicholas Church. Fro<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m the church square, you can see a large part of the town and it is only there that a vi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sitor can get a sense of a place that used to be rich<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and beautiful. Large houses with courtyards and old gates. The mountains that appear menacing when observed from the town center, from here seem tame and give a feeling of protection.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are greeted in the church by Don Matej Pali\u0107<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Janjevac w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ho, after studies outside Kosovo, retu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rned and served as a priest in Letnica and then in Janjevo. Most of his family members have left the area, so Don Mat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eo, as everyone calls him, ta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lks to us about his family home that is falling apart. He greeted us in a room filled with books amidst which a television sat playing HRT, Croatia\u2019s public broadcaster. Photo: Ferdi Limani \/ K2.0.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-79db6b0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"79db6b0\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-679c7c4\" data-id=\"679c7c4\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a1ac72 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8a1ac72\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aware of the fact that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janjevo&#8217;s Croat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children are learning th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e Serbian standard language in s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chool, Don Mateo organizes additional classes at church to teach the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m the Croatian standard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pr<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ominently placed among the books is a black and white photo of three young men with Mother Teresa. \u201cYes, that\u2019s me, a long time ago,\u201d said Don Mateo, mentioning that Mother Teresa visited Janjevo once.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don Mateo speaks about Janjevo, its traditions, culture and nature, with deep love. But with the same amount of sadness he talked about the future and how people are leaving. \u201cThere is no future here, I\u2019m afraid,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He ta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lks to us about the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sense of safety that has been destroyed due to a series of home burglaries, which have l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eft locals liv<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ing in fear for months<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In Nove<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mber, local Croats sp<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oke to Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovi\u0107 about their problems when he visited Kosovo. They told him and other officials that were with him that everyone would leave Janjevo if no one reacted. After this, five people were arrested and police patrols were increased.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the local imam, Don Mateo cares for the entire town of Janjevo. \u201cWe used to have a council of elders, and today there are only two of us,\u201d Don M<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ateo said, adding that the two of them <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are trying to solve problems in contact with institutions, but also address quarrels and help people in need in any way they can.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the chur<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ch yard, we meet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> two brothers from Janjevo. One lives in Serbia, the other in Croatia, and their parents still live in Janjevo, the place they call hom<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e. \u201cJanjevo was once like Paris,\u201d one of the brothers said a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ood in the church\u2019s yard. \u201cThe streets were clean, the people rich, everything smelled nice. Today hardly anything remains the same.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lulzim Ga<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shi, a registrar, has a similarly negative view<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He says that, as of recently, his job mostly involves helping people get their documents for departure to other countries or to the next world. There haven\u2019t been any newborns or weddings for a while in Janjevo. He says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that 4,000 peop<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">le used to live in the town and surrounding areas. Today, only around 1,600 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remain, but there are fewer every day.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People from the diaspora come to visit less and less often. \u201cThe war took its toll. It\u2019s sad when roots are cut off. Soldiers visite<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d both Janjevo and Letnica and some locals later said they wished the soldiers had been stationed with Kosovo&#8217;s Croats, saying it would make them feel safer and enliven the place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The remainin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">g Croats a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">re preserving parts of Kosovo\u2019s cultural heritage, including their dialect, their culture and a church bell believed to date from 1368.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one of the town&#8217;s five coffee sho<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ps, we met t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o Croats w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ho have stayed in Kosovo, though their families left long ago. One holds documents from three states, the other only has Kosovar documents. \u201cI don\u2019t go anywhere,\u201d he said and added that he simply didn\u2019t want to spend his time on complicated procedures to obtain documents. \u201cI have an ID and that\u2019s enough for me to live here.\u201d Bo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th tell us they d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on\u2019t expect any chang<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">es.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n Mateo nevertheless still hopes. He talks <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with locals, n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o matter their ethnicity, trying to persuade them to become active in the economy and to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urism. He tries to convince people to start talking about environmental issues and start businesses. When aske<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d whether he fears what the future may hold, he just s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aid, \u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<br><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\"><b>Letnica<br><\/b>In southeastern Kosovo, 755 meters above sea level, sits Letnic<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">a. Janjevo&#8217;s Croats, bu<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">t also people of other religions from other cities in Kosovo and North Macedonia, come here for two reas<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">ons: pilgrimage to the old shrine of Our Lady of Letnica and<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\"> the Dubrovnik restaurant. Apart from the church and the restaurant, the town also has a small shop and numerous empty homes and abandoned buil<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">dings.&nbsp;<\/span><br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is no clinic and no coffee shop. The bus doesn\u2019t go to this place at the end of the road. The silence is broken only by the occasional noise of cows that walk freely through the city. Locals tell us that they were isolated to the extent that not even Covid reached them, and that only one person fell ill throughout the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six days a week, around <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 older Croats come to the restaurant to get a daily meal.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e oldest are sisters Petra and Marija, one born in 1933, the other<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1938. We met th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">em while they were resting in chairs in front of the restaurant during one of th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e first sunny days in March<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hey say they have been providing meals for some 10 years with the help of a Croatian fund that assists Croats in the diaspora. In the first year there were around 50 people who would come. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They couple said that they know that soon there will be no one left.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The restaurant is a meeting place for the elderly of Letnica who, when they come for food, hang around, wait for others, chat a bit, and then all return to their solitude. Their children left them a long time ago, and now send money and come for visits a few times a year.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paulina is the last person who wears the traditional loc<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">al dress. We beg her to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show us the costumes in her possession. \u201cI only have this one, a normal one,\u201d she said before bringing a white woolen robe, apron, socks, and other pieces of the dress from her house. \u201cI have a bunch of them but they are in the other room, but I locked it and can\u2019t find the key now,\u201d she sai<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ever, when we met her in March, she<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was dressed in black after her only son, who lived with her in Letnica, die<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d. More th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an a month has passed since his death and Paulina still cries while talking about him. A Statue of Mary has been kept in the local church for centuries. Father Marjan Demaj, originally from the surrounding villages, holds mass every day in both Albanian and Croatian. Both services are held in an almost empty church, except for when pilgrims arrive in the sum<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leg<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">end has it that the statue of the Virgin Mary in this church, which many refer to as the Black Madonna, has miraculous powers. Certain legends posit that some people have seen tears on her face. For centuries, women of all religions and ethnicities have prayed here with the hope of becoming pregnant or for their children to be healed from sickness. Apart from the Black Madonna, the walls are painted with figures of dark-skinned female angels. The origins of the statue and the paintings on the walls are not known.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This place is important to Catholics worldwi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">de because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Mother Teresa as she&#8217;s more widely known, wa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s ordained here after years of visiting from Macedonia on pilgrimage with her paren<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ts. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Madonna of Letnica statue is believed to have been brought to Letnica from Skopje at least 400 years ago.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The believers who come to Letnica now often also walk the Trail of Mother Teresa, a winding forest path between Skopje and Letnica, parts of which some believers take bar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efoot.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> church was built<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1866 bu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t, according to Demaj, it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been demolished and rebuilt several times.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In 1928 it was rebuilt following the designs of the cathedral in Sarajevo.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-96dae6c elementor-section-full_width elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"96dae6c\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e9f63da\" data-id=\"e9f63da\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-15bab5c elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"15bab5c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1920\" height=\"1279\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.kosovotwopointzero.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/grid-croats-2.gif\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-76590\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Photos: Ferdi Limani \/ K2.0.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-82f364b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"82f364b\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c96de07\" data-id=\"c96de07\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e5f1aa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1e5f1aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ather Marjan and a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> few nuns offer help to the elderly in Letnica. The sisters make regular visits and they are equipped to provide basic medical care or take people to the doctor in Viti, a nearby town. A doctor visits Letnica once a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The church has several rooms where pilgrims stay in the summer. The priest says that he is trying to persuade the diaspora to come more often, to think about returning and rebuilding their houses. \u201cWhoever wants, we allow them to sleep in rooms next to the church instead of in hotels outside Letnica,\u201d he said. \u201cThat&#8217;s how they get a feel for life here and they can decide whether to come back.\u201d So far there have been no returnees, and only about 200 people live in the village.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe people who live here are mostly thinking of leaving,\u201d Josefina said as she prepared a meal at the restaurant. The two of them are staying but their children have left a long time ago, starting their own lives far away from Kosovo. The restaurant has been a family business for generations, but they don&#8217;t know if there will be anyone t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o leave it to.<br><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\"><b>The past<br><\/b>Historical records show that roughly 800 years ago Catholics workers and miners came to Kosovo from Dubrovnik and Herzegovin<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">a. Some settled in the area of Janjevo, 20 kilometers from today&#8217;s Prishtina, others in the areas around Letnica, close to the current border with North Macedonia. Today their descendents in these towns identify as ethnic Croats. <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">&nbsp;Th<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">ey lived continuously in these parts unti<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">l the beginning of the 1990s and the dissolution of Yugoslavia.<\/span><br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mass departure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Kosovo&#8217;s Croats s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tarted up when war broke out in<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Croati<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a. In 1991 Vo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jislav \u0160e\u0161elj, the ultranationalist politician from Serbia, came to the area around Letnica and proclaimed at a public event that Croats should be deported from<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Serbia (at that point, Kosovo was still one of Serbia\u2019s provinces) \u201ct<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o their Croatia.\u201d Months of tension and fear ensued and there were multiple incidents where Croats&#8217; property was damaged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life was becoming increasingly difficult at that tim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e. The war made it so that Letnica and Janjevo were almost cut off from the rest of Kosovo, a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd locals were forced to rely on one another. It was becoming more and more difficult to survive. It was also becoming more difficult for these communities&#8217; diasporas, which were always crucial, to send assistance back home. At one point, pensions stopped coming through, and all public incomes were interrupted. The nationalist government that ruled Croatia at the time sent a message to Croats in Kosovo that they were welcome in &#8220;the motherlan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d,&#8221; and the mass emigration began.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1991 and onwards the government in Zagreb supported the emigration, a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s did organizations close to t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he Catholic Church that interceded to ensure as many people as possible left. They organized buses and those who were able to afford it transported their property by truck. The Dutc<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">h researcher Ge<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r Duijzi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ngs, much of whose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hrcak.srce.hr\/file\/75334\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">academic work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> focuses on the Croats of Kosovo, w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rites that during his 1994 visit to Letnica he encountere<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d merely 20 inhabited households, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a few others in the surrounding villages, and most were elderly people.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although their invitation came from the highest rung of government, Kosovo&#8217;s Croats were not well received in Croatia. Those with family members in Croatia, mostly those from Janjevo, headed for Zagreb, where there has b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">een a large Janjevo diaspora since the 1950s. Th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e rest were sent to war-torn areas in Slavonija and to the hinterland of Knin, which Serbs were abandoning en masse at the same time, some heading for Kosovo, where Serbian authorities were awarding them abandoned houses, including those in villages around Letnica and Janjevo. Back then, the Split-based independent daily Feral Tribune described the process as \u201cdemographic engineering,\u201d claiming that the leaders of Croatia and Serbia had agreed on such a plan.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although they were promised documents, the Croats arriving from Kosovo didn\u2019t immediately receive them and many lived for years in abandoned, often damaged homes of Serbs who had fled.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was only in 1995 that the government started awarding them citizenship, which meant automatic access to social welfare, health care and the labor market. And although authorities promised to build them new homes, some stayed in the homes of displaced Serbs for years. In one case in the village Duma\u010de, some approximately 200 people from Letnica only received keys for their promised new houses in April 2017. In these semi-deserted and demolished places, they were joined by Croats from Vojvodina and Bosnia and Herzegovina, who also arrived thanks to the invitation from the government in Zagreb.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-961d6bb elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"961d6bb\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ae001d7\" data-id=\"ae001d7\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0073047 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"0073047\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.kosovotwopointzero.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/FLM-Croats.015.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-76596\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">The church in Letnica is modeled after the Sarajevo Cathedral. Photo: Ferdi Limani \/ K2.0.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9f37bc2 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9f37bc2\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c176ab1\" data-id=\"c176ab1\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0b0812 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a0b0812\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The localities where the Croats from Kosovo live are some of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vecernji.hr\/vijesti\/istrazili-smo-pozadinu-sukoba-izme-u-hrvata-starosjedilaca-i-hrvata-s-kosova-1201847\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poorest municipalities in Croatia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with high unemployment and a large number of people forced to rely on social welfare. As in Kosovo, much of the youth decide to leave and join the large wave of those migrating to other countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And there are still problems with relations with the communities originally from these villages, which to this day don&#8217;t fully accept their new neighbors. But the politicians&#8217; goals have been achieved and today these areas are predominantly populated by C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roats.<br><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\"><b>Staying on<br><\/b>The Croats w<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">ho left Kosovo have brought with them part of the cultural heritage of the co<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">untry \u2014 language and culture. To<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">day in Croatia there are several associations that gather together people from Janjevo and Letnica, and for a number of years there has b<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">een a yearly event in Zagreb that tries to help preserve the unique local di<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">alects.<\/span><br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With fe<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wer and fewer people in both towns, these dialects are increasingly rare in Kosovo itself. At the same time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Croat and Roma children in Janjevo attend a school <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that uses the Serbian curriculum, while there are no longer any Croat children in Letnica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kosovo Croat community decided to enroll their children in the Serbian curriculum after considering the Albanian, Bosnian and Serbian-language programs available in Koso<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vo. The reason for this is simple survival. The<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Serbian authorities offer everyone in their school system in Kosovo a monthly scholarship, including free textbooks and school supplies. Kids who attend secondary school in line with the Serbian curriculum also receive scholarships. For many families, this is a source of income that makes their survival possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The school in Janjevo used to have more tha<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n 3,000 p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">u<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pils. To<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">day there are fewer than 300, includi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ng 14 Croats and 36 Roma. Tea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chers say that the number of children in schools, of all ethnicities, is fewer and fewer every m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">onth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first floor of the school in Janjevo children attend classes in Albanian, while on the second floor are the classes in Serbian<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The school has two <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">directors and separate teaching staff. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, only four Croat children have enrolled in the first grade. Al<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l children enter the building through the same entrance, where they are welcomed by a colorful rug and a wooden shoe rack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both floors appear to have seen better days an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d the feeling when entering the school is like going into the past, at least 30 years back if not m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ore.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e9326b0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e9326b0\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ea81860\" data-id=\"ea81860\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-efdf1bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"efdf1bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.kosovotwopointzero.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/FLM-Croats.005.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-75774\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Serbian cyrillic letters are on the blackboard of the Serbian curriculum school in Janjevo, where the only students are Croats and Roma. Photo: Ferdi Limani \/ K2.0.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-fdcb142 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"fdcb142\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-bc256a3\" data-id=\"bc256a3\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7667786 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7667786\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uture is happening outside, in the schoolyard, where the children from both floors play together and learn each other\u2019s languages and about one anot<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attending classes in the Serbian curriculum creates hurdles for Croat students down the road. It w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ould be difficult to continue their education in Kosovo because even when they speak Albanian, it usually isn&#8217;t at a level that is sufficient for academics and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Serbian diplomas they receive aren&#8217;t valid in Kosovo.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Before they head to Croatia they have to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">master the standard variant of Croatian<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and verify their diplomas, so Serbia becomes their only option, or going far from the Balkans.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked about whose curriculum they use to teach history, one of the teachers said that most often they don&#8217;t teach history classes because it is difficult to answer questions about the war and everything that happened where they live. \u201cIt is hard to teach about that and to know what to say to the children,&#8221; she said, adding that the kids don&#8217;t even ask about it.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another question that the teachers don\u2019t have an answer to is what type of future awaits those who decide to stay in Janjevo. &#8220;There&#8217;s no future here,&#8221; said one of the teachers on the second floor. &#8220;People are leaving every <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">day.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In both<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Letnica and Janjevo, you can hear the sorrow in people&#8217;s voices.
