As the names of women murdered by their intimate partners, husbands or other family members echoed through the streets, protesters marched through Prishtina on Saturday, March 8, <\/span>to mark International Women\u2019s Day<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

They called for \u201cnot one more\u201d name to be added to the growing list of femicide victims in Kosovo. The march was held under the slogan \u201cWe march for one another\u201d \u2014 <\/span>Marshojm\u00eb p\u00ebr njana-tjetr\u00ebn<\/span><\/a> \u2014 an expression of solidarity from women to women, in a context where deeply-rooted patriarchy makes leaning on one another the safest place for women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Marshojm\u00eb s\u2019festojm\u00eb collective organized the march through a participatory process, in which the public was invited <\/span>to join preparations over a month before the march took place<\/span><\/a>. Activists gathered in different parts of the city, including Termokiss community center and University of Prishtina Student Center, to fundraise and work on the messages and materials of the march.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

At one of Prishtina\u2019s main police stations, protesters hurled red paint and flares: striking symbols of the blood of murdered women and a call for a stronger mobilization by the police to protect women. <\/span>Kosovo Police has failed to prevent femicide<\/span><\/a> on a number of occasions, like those of <\/span>Sebahate Morina in 2021<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Hamide Magashi in 2022<\/span><\/a>, by failing to implement court decisions and respond effectively to victims\u2019 calls for protection. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A few steps after the police station, protesters marched past a white flag with red letters hanging off a tall building. The flag read: \u201cA better future is possible.\u201d The present, however, is grim for women in Kosovo.<\/span><\/p>

Just days before the march, it was reported that a young woman, who, <\/span>in 2022, was raped for seven hours by five men in a public park in Prishtina when she was 11<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>was recently raped again by dozens of men<\/span><\/a>. The victim was known for the Center for Social Work, making this case an even starker example of recurrent institutional failure to stand up for women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Femicide \u2014 the intentional killing of women because of their gender \u2014 has cut short the lives of far too many Kosovar women. <\/span>58 women were killed in Kosovo from 2010 to April 2024<\/span><\/a>. Their names were read aloud throughout the march, reminding everyone that they are not to be forgotten.<\/span><\/p>

Domestic abuse or gender-based violence, often precursors to femicide, loom large in Kosovo. <\/span>The Ministry of Justice identified 2,385 women as victims of domestic violence in 2024<\/span><\/a>. This was a 12.5% increase from 2023, when 2,120 women reported being victims of domestic violence. These numbers most likely do not tell the full story, <\/span>as many cases go unreported due to a lack of trust in institutional responses<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

Moreover, <\/span>homophobia<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>transphobia<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>racism<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>ableism<\/span><\/a> and other forms of discrimination continue to intersect with patriarchy, creating multilayered oppression against women. This oppression often goes unnoticed and unaddressed.\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>

The protesters loudly condemned institutional inaction and complicity, chanting: \u201cThe state remains silent as women are killed,\u201d \u201cThe courts, the police, the state have women\u2019s blood on their hands\u201d and \u201cHow many more missed calls?\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

They also called for welfare policies, not a one-off \u201cpayment for reproduction.\u201d This was a response to politicians\u2019 rhetoric during the recent electoral campaign in Kosovo. <\/span>While all bigger parties proposed some form of payment to women upon childbirth<\/span><\/a>, they fell short in proposing other policies that ensure consistent support for women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As usual, the march ended in front of the government building, <\/span>which was not heavily guarded by regular and special police forces, as was the case in 2024<\/span><\/a>. It remains to be seen how or whether Kosovo\u2019s next government will respond to activists\u2019 longstanding demands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
